2017: The Year of the Video

Posted on in Blog

There were a lot of trends that were here and gone again in 2016, but one that is here to stay through 2017 and beyond is video. Last year as an agency we shot, edited and produced more videos than we have in our company history. Pretty incredible! Some of these videos were for our internal marketing purposes, but a majority of them were for our clients.

Video is by no means a new conversation, but it has picked up a lot of momentum over the last year or so. Video ad spend is predicted to be up by about 31% this year according to Forbes and in the same breath, Cisco has predicted that by 2020, 80% of internet traffic will be video.

We had a particularly fun time shooting videos for our client Chateau Grand Traverse. Last year we shot three videos for them. Our goal was to create more brand awareness for them as well as show off the fun side of the company as well as the wine industry. In this blog we share each video and provide a few insight stats, from the initial idea to the final product and actual performance results on Facebook.

The Idea

Coming up with a really compelling idea is usually the most time-consuming part of the process. Our content team works differently for each project, but usually one of us has an idea, we bring it to the rest of the team and then build on it. Pitching concepts that are original and have that shareable quality is important. The videos that we made for CGT had both of these elements.

How to Chill Wine Northern Michigan Style

This video came together seamlessly. We thought it was a cool idea and we picked a hot 80-degree day and headed out on Long Lake for a couple of hours to shoot it. Although the film crew was extremely sunburned after the fact, once we saw the edited version, we couldn’t wait to share it with CGT and see how their audience would react. We thought it was great but had no idea how well received it would be:

  • More than 26,000 people reached
  • More than 9,000 video views
  • 777 reactions, comments & shares

How to Open a Bottle of Wine with a Shoe

Another well-received video was “How to Open a Bottle of Wine with your Shoe.” It turns out there are a lot of alternate ways to open wine bottles, but after doing some research, we went with the shoe, not only because it seemed safer than using a knife or a hitting a bottle against a book to open it, but it was also something, similar to chilling wine on a boat, that a viewer could easily do. Once it was posted on Facebook it did really well:

  • More than 19,000 people reached
  • More than 8,000 video views
  • 341 reactions, comments & shares

How Many Grapes Does it Take to Make a Bottle of Wine?

Our most recent video, “How Many Grapes Does it Take to Make a Bottle of Wine?” was a stop-motion video—something we hadn’t done before. We rolled up our sleeves and carefully moved 1,204 grapes around a barrel for most of a day. The stop-action video was different than the other two videos and we thought it would be a good way to break down the process in a visually interesting way that also showed off each grape individually. The idea behind this video was to be educational and also fun. Here are the Facebook stats:

  • More than 24,000 people reached
  • More than 9,000 video views
  • 548 reactions, comments & shares

Why Video is Here to Stay

As we embark on 2017 we are looking forward to what the year holds for us in the video realm! There’s lots of room to grow in this market and we’re stepping up to the plate. Check out this infographic for a detailed breakdown of why 2017 is the year of video marketing.
