Zapier: Integrations and Automations for Marketers

Posted on in Blog

There are never enough hours in the day to get it all done, but Zapier automations could save you enough time to drink your morning coffee before it goes cold. Zapier and no-code alternatives like Make and Integrately are smart ways to automate repetitive tasks and free up more time for big-picture thinking. If you’re looking to reduce busy work with cost-effective software, Zapier is a possible solution for you.

Disclaimer: Zapier is not a Oneupweb client (but hey, call us). Nor did they pay us for this post (but hey, call us). We sincerely dig the software and hope you’ll consider giving it – or its competitors – a shot if you want to get more done.

First, What Is Zapier and How Does It Work?

Zapier is a no-code automation tool that connects different apps to perform repetitive tasks without custom code. Zapier designed its automations to reduce recurring tasks like data entry or email notifications by being able to trigger specific actions, move data from one app to another, or send alerts across different platforms. Zapier offers users over 7,000 integrations with big (and small) software and applications, including:Google Sheets

  • Slack

  • Asana

  • Mailchimp

  • Teamwork

  • HubSpot

No matter what project management, word processing, or customer relationship management software your organization uses, Zapier can likely connect them all.

How Does Zapier Work?

Zapier uses APIs and webhooks to create workflows, such as automatically adding form-fill data from HubSpot to a Google Sheet or converting your Siri reminder to a Microsoft To-Do task. Zapier calls these workflows “zaps,” and there are potentially dozens of unique zaps to build for any single integration.

How to Use Zapier, Simplified

  1. Create a zap – Link two (or more!) apps in the Zapier dashboard.
  2. Set a trigger – Choose the event in one app to start the workflow. For example, this might be an email from a specific sender (a current client, perhaps) or new data entered into a shared spreadsheet.
  3. Define the action – Define the response in another app by choosing what happens after the trigger. That could be getting a notification in Slack, creating a new task in Asana, or adding a client to an automated email flow in Mailchimp.
  4. Set filters – Filters restrict how frequently a trigger fires or which actions occur. You can also set delays so that Slack notifications arrive Monday morning rather than while you’re at dinner Sunday night.
  5. Customize the workflow – Zapier integrations allow multi-application workflows to create multiple actions based on a single trigger.

Is Zapier Free?

When you set up an account, you get one – that’s right, one – free zap. Zapier subscriptions vary based on the number of users (The team plan starts at $69 per month) or the number of zaps you create (The professional plan starts at $20 per month).

The Best Zapier Integrations for Digital Marketers

No matter your role, there’s a Zapier integration that will make life a little easier. You can use Zapier for digital marketing leads, monitor Google Ads, and disseminate data (securely) to tools like Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel.

These are three of our favorite automations for more efficient marketing:

1. Update Google Ads Offline Conversions

For B2B marketers, longer sales cycles muddy Google Ads conversion data and often require manually updating offline conversions weeks or months after the initial click. With the Google Ads and HubSpot Zapier integration, there’s no going back. Set a trigger to monitor contact status; when a lead updates from “Lifecycle Stage” to “Marketing Qualified Lead,” it automatically adds that contact as an offline conversion in Google Ads. You can also automate Google Ads notifications in Zapier, so you know when there’s an issue with a campaign or ad group.

2. Create Teamwork Tasks from Semrush Site Audits

Our SEO team monitors dozens of client domains in Semrush’s site audit tool. When Semrush identifies a new issue, the Teamwork and Semrush integration automatically creates a task for the right SEO to review. It’s a quick way to inspect and prioritize technical site health without manually checking multiple domains or having Semrush emails get lost in crowded inboxes.

3. Get Typeform Survey Responses in Slack

We use Typeform surveys to solicit client goals, feedback, and project objectives – and since our clients are busy, smart, and incredibly good-looking, they don’t always reply right away or all at once. By connecting Typeform with Slack, our account managers immediately notify us that we have a new survey to review. Depending on the project and client, we can also generate a task for the SEO or developer working on the account to take that survey response and run with it!

Can Zapier Text Messages and Send Emails?

This is one of the most common questions Zapier users have, and yes, Zapier can send emails and text messages. You’ll need to use Email by Zapier or SMS by Zapier, although there are limits on how many emails or texts you can send at once. You can even get text messages to alert you whenever Zapier sends emails on your half – which is pretty slick.
